On Friday 19th of March at 14 pm the 1st International Congress of Design and Innovation in Sabadell Catalonia which brought to 124 speakers from 14 countries was closed.
For two days have demonstrated the transformational capacity of design, especially in times of crisis, being able to integrate the core scientific and technological advances in products and services that improve the quality of life as well as compete in a global world.

As the president of ESDi Foundation (FUNDIT) Mr. Josep Bombardó said, "design has become a strategic factor, without which the construction of the future seems unattainable".

The 60 papers and 7 plenary sessions, contextualized in a highly competitive society, especially in countries where supply exceeds demand, and where the level of capital income that competitiveness requires not only question of price.
The key to these economies lies in the seduction of products and its rich content and value contributed. The firms whose organizations are facing the challenges of competitiveness, and are aware that achieving success can grow, extend their lives, generate employment, address complex problems, and become benchmarks.

These challenges require the pursuit of excellence on the business, and not to ignore the strengths and weaknesses of their competitors. It is in this context where we have made clear the enormous potential of design to move forward in a more competitive economy, a new economy that, in the words of German designer Gui Bonsiepe "should leave the financial industry -which produces bubbles burst-, to the industry that produces real products that generate wealth and quality of life".

Before the official closing of the congress, the designer André Ricard and Gui Bonsiepe, with the Professor Alastair Fuad-Luke, did a reading about the 'experiences of congress'. These include the establishment of design as a service, and the need to move from ego-design to co-design in the line that FUNDIT driven since 2002. It highlighted the strength of the triangle Science-Technology-Design, as well as the increasing importance of multidisciplinary design, and the necessity of objectifying the subjective to advance the design and management in the articulation of a scientific methodology itself.

Gui Bonsiepe emphasized the words of Mr. Bombardó to say that the design "is not a value, is the core value". "It is autonomous", he added.

Fuad-Luke, and sustainable design expert and co-design (design group), mentioned "the need to balance our skills as professionals with the ability we have to work as a team". Citing the need to leave the office to know different people, to understand other perspectives, other viewpoints. As professionals we must reflect on what we can learn from others.
"Designing the maze between all to get out of it" were the last words of his conclusion.

André Ricard defined the Congress as a kaleidoscope, because of the large number of tools and concepts. But for him, until the design does not reach the stores, the general public will not understand its relevance.

During the closing ceremony after the conclusions developed by the three invited speakers, Dr. Esther Giménez-Salinas said "ESDi believes in responsible design" and emphasized the school's tradition of innovation. "The design has a responsibility in many areas, and the success of this congress confirms that we are on track".

For his part, Mayor Manuel Bustos, after recognizing the strategic vision of the founding producers guild ESDi 20 years ago, showed the potential it represents for the city to have the center as a school committed to the future, competitiveness and sustainable development.
